World Wildlife Fund (WWF) leads international efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats. WWF works in more than 100 countries around the globe to conserve the diversity of life on earth. WWF directs its conservation efforts toward three global goals: saving endangered species, protecting endangered habitats and addressing global threats such as toxic pollution, over-fishing and climate change.

Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. We focus our programs on what scientists consider two of the most serious environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction.

Animal and plant species are disappearing 100 times faster than a century and a half ago. Despite some successes, less than 10 percent of endangered species are recovering. Most depend on private land for survival, but many landowners have been reluctant to maintain wildlife habitat on their land, fearful that their reward for attracting endangered species would be increased government regulation. Environmental Defense pioneered the Safe Harbor program, which encourages landowners to protect and restore the habitat of endangered plants and animals without government restrictions.
